Dedicated to doing the best possible job at improving well-being, health and function, Christopher Grady-Benson, MD, FAAOS was inspired to pursue a career in health care by his mother, who was a nurse. Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in in English and American literature from Brown University in 1981, he went on to obtain a Doctor of Medicine from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1985. From there, he excelled as an orthopedic surgery resident at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and as a fellow in total joint replacement and adult reconstruction orthopedic surgery at the Scripps Clinic.

Presently, Dr. Grady-Benson serves as the physician-in-chief of the Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Healthcare, a role he commenced in 2019, as well as an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine since 2000. Prior, for 25 notable years, he served Orthopedic Associates of Hartford PC. In addition, he has been an orthopedic surgeon at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and an assistant professor at the University of Michigan between 1991 and 1996.

As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Grady-Benson is inspired by moving from treating one individual at a time to improving processes of care in a patient-centered way to improve quality care metrics across systems and populations of patients, using standardization of care and still being respectful to how individual’s standards need special attention. Dr. Grady-Benson is continually inspired by the dedication, concern, and caring attitudes of all the staff whom he works with, who always try to bring their best selves with kindness and respect to the healthcare environment. Further making him a better professional, he has made it a habit to call every single patient who was going to have an elective joint replacement or elective surgery the night before to make sure all their questions were answered.

Dr. Grady-Benson currently maintains professional membership with the Healthcare Value Advisory Council/HVAC, International Consortium of Health Outcomes Measurement/ICHOM, American Medical Association, Connecticut State Medical Society, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons/AAOS, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons/AAHKS and Phi Beta Kappa. Looking ahead, one of Dr. Grady-Benson’s goals is to develop a Hartford Healthcare systemwide and statewide data registry that will allow the staff to track and improve outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal problems. Personally, he aims to spend more time hiking outdoors in the wilderness.
